75 Years of the United Nations: Highlights, Calamity, and Conflict

From the ruins of World War II came the birth of an organization which has placed peace and cooperation amongst all nations of the world: The United Nations.

Since 1945, the United Nations, an international organization of 51 countries, has committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Some of the 51 countries in the U.N. include the United States, the UK, Argentina, Canada, Cambodia, Zimbabwe, and more.

The U.N was founded by the Allied victors, the goal was to avert another descent into another global apocalypse.

How has the U.N changed since 1945?

  • The U.N has grown from 50 members 75 years ago to 193 members and a global staff of 44,000.

  • The influence of the United States, which was overwhelming in the United Nations in the past, has gradually declined because of the rise of the Third World.

  • In the 1950s and 1960s, decolonization, or the process by which former colonial territories became independent states, transformed the composition and functioning of the UN.

What has the United Nations accomplished?

  • Promoting women’s rights

(1979 UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women)

  • Fighting hunger

(The UN Food and Agriculture Organization)

  • Alleviating rural poverty in developing countries

(The International Fund for Agricultural Development)

  • Protecting Consumers’ Health

(FAO and the World Health Organization)

  • Wiping out polio

(Global Polio Eradication Initiative)

  • Containing the world drug problem

(UN Office on Drugs and Crime)

  • Responding to HIV/AIDS

(United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS)

  • Combating terrorism

(Counter-Terrorism Committee)

However, with the grand anniversary coming up, this celebration faces a gloomy tone and events: a pandemic, rise of famines and displacement, climate change, and critique from powerful leaders, such as Donald Trump.

From the ruins of World War II came an establishment fundamental and key to the peace and security our nations have now. 75 years now, the U.N. is as important as ever.
